Dirty Little Secret #1

My house is a work in progress...a design in the works...a masterpiece...oh never mind. I have decided to share my homes 'dirty little secrets' in the hope that I may gain some much needed inspiration, help and advice on what I should do with them. So the best thing is to start with one of the first eyesores in my house as you walk in the front door. My home lacks a main foyer and opens up into the living room. Look to you left and you will see this. Brace yourself. It's scary.

Do you see it? The menace? The pain in my drain?

Smack dead center is the most UGGO lighting fixture you may have ever seen! And look...its in the middle of my fire mantle scape! What is a girl to do?

Dusty and ugly. What should I do? Take it off and cover it up? Then we loose a fair amount of light in the room. We could however bring in a floor lamp. I see a mirror there of some sort. I thought about spray painting it for the time being, but that darn glass shade is just too uggo. Any ideas and inspiration pics would be greatly appreciated. I really need your help blog friends! This is my official S.O.S. (suddenly I hear the Police singing-"sendin out an S.O.S...")

So there you have it. DLS #1.

P.S. thinking about painting the bricks white. Thoughts?????
Look forward to your ideas, thoughts, inspirations...

Am totally agreeing with dawn on this one. "The light has got to go!!!"...Floor lamps, are a better light source anyway...especially a torchere, which directs the light up, for a great ambiance...Be brave, and paint out the brick, then get your sweet fella to put a big, trimmed out mantle, up there...this will open a whole new world of mantle scapes...FUN, FUN, FUN!!!...this is only Rosie's two bits.

Oh I have lived in many a homes that I wonder... WHAT were they thinking?
I painted a fireplace just like that white...what a difference it makes.
I would take that light fixture off and cover it with a lovely old mirror or many mirrors. I have 4 old mirrors on my mantle..love the look. xoxo

...ok I am a bit of a chandelier freak so here is what I say.
.turn the light fixture into a socket outlet...
. wire a very sparkley chandelier with a plug end.
..lean a beautiful mirror so the socket is hidden and there is room for the cord to lay
.and then put a decorative hook in the ceiling.
.hang the chandelier above the mantle and to the side
.yes you will see some cord...cover that with a gross grain ribbon cord cover or linen cord cover or taffeta...you get it
. or a wonderful mantle sized lamp (or 2!) and lean the mirror hiding the cord!...
.I agree with those that say paint the brick...you will have to determine what looks best with your insert
but you can also buy a small can of heat resistant paint to get rid of the gold if you desire!...let me know what you think of my ideas (I have thick skin)!

Becky!!!! OMG I would just die to have that fireplace and oh the things I would have fun doing with it!!! Honestly I just know you are going to transform it into a masterpiece!!! I vote white bricks...a large white painted wood mantle u can place over the current one...a gorgeous mirror to cover that funny place for a light! I can't wait to see what you do...I seriously have an OBSESSION with fireplaces....ask me why we bought a house without one again?? lol Next house this is top 3 on my list!

Found you at Holly's Fresh Coat Friday. I would totally paint the fireplace! I love the empty white frames. Great look.
